EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION: $125,000 Settlement Reached by Muslim Officer and the City

April 9, 2011

Fremont – A Muslim employee who was allegedly discriminated has now reached an agreement with the city and the Fremont Unified School District regarding the latter’s claim, reports said.

According to documents, Matthew Fernandes, who was also a U.S. Army veteran, filed a discrimination case against the city and the Fremont Unified School District after being terminated shortly after being interrogated about his religion.

The claim states that Fernandes was questioned regarding an alleged community outreach program that will benefit Muslim Americans. The queries reportedly got more serious as he was interrogated about his beliefs and views on the Islamic Law.

Fernandes was not charged with any crime but he was soon let go from the Fremont Police Department.

Fernandes has joined two tours by the U.S. Army in Iraq and he converted to Islam after some time in the army.
