VEHICLE ACCIDENT: 29-Year-Old Driver Arrested After Fatal Crash Last April

January 27, 2012

WESTMINSTER – A 29-year-old woman from San Diego has been arrested Thursday for killing a motorist while running at 80 miles per hour last April, reports said.

According to reports, Jorene Ypanto Nicolas was charged with a felony count of vehicular manslaughter after 23-year-old Deanna Mauer died in the said crash in April.

The accident happened on Interstate 405 near Edwards Street. Nicolas was driving at nearly 80 mph when she failed to notice traffic ahead had already stopped.

Nicolas then crashed her car into the rear end of a Hyundai sedan driven by Mauer, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

The victim’s car was pushed into another car in front of her, and then hit the center divider before finally stopping.

She was then taken to UCI Medical Center where she was pronounced dead due to vertebral artery transaction.

According to reports, it was believed that Nicolas was texting before the accident happened. The District Attorney’s Office called it one of the worst cases of distracted driving.

If convicted, Nicolas will face a maximum of six years in state prison. According to reports, she is being held on $100,000 bail and is to be arraigned Monday.
