5 People Killed in a Burning Rollover Crash

August 4, 2009

Mission Viejo – According to the California Highway Patrol investigators, five people died in a fiery rollover crash at I-5 freeway in La Paz Road. The victims have yet to be identified as they were burned beyond recognition.

The accident was a solo-vehicle crash and it occurred at around 10:27am on Tuesday morning. The Chevrolet Tracker reportedly veered off the freeway for unknown reasons and hit a signpost before it rolled down an embankment.

The small SUV crashed through a fence and hit a tree before it burst into flames. The SUV landed on it head behind the Borders bookstore at the shopping center. Witnesses claimed it might have blown a tire and several people tried to help and put out the fire.

Authorities could not determine the ages or the genders of the people in the doomed SUV. A Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigations Team arrived at noon to do an in-depth analysis of the crash scene. This group is made up of multiple agencies that can include Caltrans workers and engineers.

The Chevrolet Tracker has previously received the worst possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It’s death rate was almost three times higher than the average death rate for all passenger vehicles.
