May 12, 2010

Fremont – A 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence following a fatal car accident on Interstate 680 near Fremont yesterday morning.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has identified the suspected DUI driver as Timothy Bartelt, 53, of Livermore while the Alameda County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Adam Bajer, 45, also of Livermore.

According to the CHP, the car accident occurred at about 9:30 in the morning yesterday on the southbound lanes near Andrade road.

The crash was triggered when the pickup that Bartelt was driving on the fast lane veered into the pickup that Bajer was driving.

The collision caused both vehicles to lose control and rollover.

Bajer died at the scene while his passenger, a 35-year-old male relative from Livermore, sustained major injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Bartelt was arrested by the CHP and was also brought to the hospital after sustaining minor injuries.

He is scheduled to be transferred to Santa Rita Jail once cleared by the hospital.
