6-Year Old Boy Almost Drowns In Pool Accident

June 30, 2009

PLACENTIA – The Orange County Fire Department responded to an emergency call when a 6-year old boy nearly drowned at a mobile home park swimming pool at Rose Drive.

Authorities said that the boy's parents were not around at the time and was only with his 14-year old sister when the incident occurred. It was his sister who rescued him and saved his life by administering CPR.

Apparently, the boy almost drowned when he lost his hold on the side of the pool. Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg McKeown however said that the boy wasn't under water for a long time. He added that the boy was already conscious and in moderate condition when he was taken to Children's Hospital of Orange County.

According to the Orange County Fire Authority, there have been 20 drowning emergencies since January, four of which have been fatal.

To prevent further fatal drowning accidents, McKeown recommends practicing the ABCs of drowning - adult supervision, barriers in place, and swimming classes.

He further reminded that any drowning is avoidable if there is adult supervision.

A California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development report recently found drowning continues to be the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4 years old, both in California and Orange County.
