September 14, 2009

A California-based company and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall on more than 1,000 cases of parsley which may be tainted with salmonella, a bacteria that is the major cause food-borne diseases worldwide.

Muranaka Farm, Inc. reported that the salmonella-tainted parsley were distributed in retail and food service outlets in 10 states including California, Florida, Colorado, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, Illinois, Iowa, and Arizona.

The company said the products were shipped in boxes with a Muranaka label and bears a sticker with a lot code 0023909.

The recall has been announced after FDA discovered that the products are tainted with salmonella.

In a statement, Muranaka President Greg Emi said the company is continuously working with FDA officials to prevent potential salmonella outbreak.

Meanwhile, there is no reported case of illness caused by the recalled products.

Food safety experts said the salmonella infection usually appear after 12 to 72 hours of eating a tainted product. Common symptoms include severe diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, fever, and abdominal.

While most people recover from salmonella infection after four to seven days without treatment, children, elderly, and individuals with weak immunity requires immediate medical attention.
