Baby Food Recalled Over Possible Botulism Contamination

October 20, 2009

Emeryville - A food company has announced on Tuesday a voluntary recall on its baby food products which may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a food-borne bacterium which may cause respiratory failure if left untreated.

In a statement, Plum Organics said its 4.22-ounce carrot- and apple-flavored baby food did not meet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standard in acidity level, making the products vulnerable to bacterial growth and contamination.

The company warns parents from feeding their babies with the recalled products due to possible health risk.

The recalled baby foods , which have a “best before” date of May 21, 2010, were sold in Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores.

Meanwhile, there is no reported case of botulism to this date.
