EMPLOYMENT LAW: Big Lots Pays $400,000 to Settle Race Discrimination Suit

February 16, 2010

Rancho Cucamonga - Closeout store Big lots has agreed to settle the class-action lawsuit alleging that the company has committed racial discrimination and harassment against black workers, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) said.

EEOC officials said the store chain will pay $400,000 as a settlement to black workers from its California distribution center.

As part of the settlement, Big Lots has also agreed to overhaul its company policy to prevent unlawful discrimination and provide employees and supervisors with training programs to address discrimination and harassment.

In September 2008, EEOC has filed suit against the discount retail store on behalf of the plaintiffs.

When asked for comments, Big Lots officials said the company “does not allow them to make any statement regarding legal actions and settlements.”
