Boy in a Coma Because of Bike Crash with Truck without a Helmet

Just like MTV reality star Rikki Mongeon who was placed medically induced coma after suffering head injuries in a motor vehicle accident, a 7-year old boy from Garden Grove suffered a similar fate when he was struck by a Ford truck.

The boy was riding his bike around 5 in the afternoon across El Prado Avenue when he was hit by 47-year old Anaheim resident Kha Huynh. The boy, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was dragged a short distance by the truck.

The driver stopped after the accident and waited for the police while the boy was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana in a critical condition.

The 7-year old was placed in a medically induced coma.

The human head is the most vulnerable to injuries that can devastate or change a person’s life. But paralysis, coma, or mental impairment is the least of your worries if you get a head injury – people die too easily from head injuries. In fact, majority of fatalities in motorcycle or bicycle accidents died because of serious head injuries.

Accidents are difficult to avoid because even if you’re careful, there are just as many drivers, motorists, or pedestrians who are reckless and negligent.

But in situations like the bicycle accident involving the little boy and the truck, one precaution could have made a difference: wearing a helmet. The simple act of wearing a helmet when you ride a bike or a motorcycle can decrease the severity of head injuries, the likelihood of death, as well as the overall cost of medical treatment.

But bear in mind that wearing a helmet will not entirely avoid all the injuries, especially impact of the crash is too strong or the rider gets thrown off his bike. Wearing a helmet will give the rider a fighting chance for survival as the likelihood of crash fatality by as much as 37 percent.

Also, it should be noted that wearing a helmet alone is not head-injury proof, substandard helmets can crack so it is advisable that you get helmets that are certified or compliant with the US Department of Transportation standards.

In case of serious injuries even after the exercise of due care, diligence and taking all protective measures, the reckless or negligent party may be held liable for compensation in a personal injury lawsuit. Check with a personal injury lawyer to determine your claim and how to go about it.
