BUS ACCIDENT: Bus Chain Crash Closes Down 5 Freeway

May 18, 2011

Commerce — An accident involving a chain reaction collision of four buses -- three of which were carrying military personnel -- closed down both the northbound and southbound lanes of 5 Freeway late last night, reports said.

Authorities closed the road for less than an hour later due to the scale of the accident, which left a total of eight people injured and taken to the hospital. Two of the victims are jail inmates and the rest are military personnel.

The accident occurred near Washington Boulevard around midnight. Reports said that the accident was caused by a sudden slowing of a car in the fast lane where the buses are driving.

The sudden change of speed forced the bus driver up front to slam on his breaks, making the three buses behind him crash on his rear in a chain reaction. Most of the inmates suffered only minor injuries.
