BUS ACCIDENT: Bus filled with inmates crashed on I-10 median in Palm Desert

November 4, 2010

Palm Desert – A bus transporting inmates from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department crashed into a median Thursday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred at about 5:15 pm on the westbound lane of Interstate 10, west of Cook Street. The Sheriff’s Department said that the bus was struck by another car, causing it to swerve off and hit the center divider. Some of its tires also blew out.

None of the 33 inmates aboard fled, but four complained of pain and were taken to a hospital, Deputy Melissa Nieburger said. The inmates were transferred to another bus to continue the trip.

Nieburger added that authorities are not yet sure how many vehicles were involved. Even if no lanes were blocked, several police units on the scene and spectators in both directions who want to take a peek at the crash slowed down traffic.
