41 states filed suit against CD distributors and music retailers
For years many consumers have been complaining about the relatively high prices of CDs. This is because they were generally priced much higher than vinyl records, even though they were just as cheap, if not cheaper, to manufacture.
Forty one states filed suit against five CD distributors and three music retailers. They charge that the companies had conspired to fix minimum prices for CDs. The parties agreed to settle the lawsuit, and one of the terms of the settlement was that the companies agreed to reimburse customers who purchased music products between 1995 and 2000 by paying out a total of about $44 million in refunds.

There are also reports of fraud and deceitful activities concerning the production of CDs that even reached court and underwent litigation. Most cases concerning CDs were tried as a class action suit. One of the celebrated CD class action settlement is the one concerning Sony BMG CD involving the security defects in the digital rights management software contained on Sony’s music CDs.
In the CD class action settlement the plaintiffs ask that the company cease the production of CDs that contain the defective software. They also ask the fixing of any weakness in the protection software manufactured by the company.
