MOTORCYCLE CRASH: CHP officer killed after crashing on to a big rig

June 11, 2010

Redlands – The death of a California Highway Patrol officer Friday morning is the second accident that involved a CHP officer this week.

Tom Coleman, a seven-year veteran of the CHP, smashed his motorcycle into a tractor-trailer while chasing four suspects in San Bernardino County.

According to CHP Spokesman Mario Lopez, Coleman tried to pull over a Ford Focus on Mountain View Drive near 210 Freeway for vehicle code violations. The pursuit that reached to 100 mph followed when the vehicle refused to stop and fled. CHP Officer Daniel Hesser said Coleman had his lights and sirens on.

Coleman crashed into the big rig on a curb. The Ford also crashed later near the Citrus Plaza Shopping Center. The four people inside were all arrested.

Jose Acosta, a delivery truck driver, witnessed the accident. He tried to help Coleman by using a fire extinguisher to put out the flames that consumed the motorcycle. He claimed that Coleman was thrown to the pavement and laid there unconscious.

A man from a nearby school also helped Coleman by doing CPR before the fire trucks and ambulances arrived. He was pronounced dead around 6:30 a.m.

Coleman, whose age was not released, was married with two children. Another CHP officer who met an accident on Wednesday in Los Angeles is still in critical condition.
