PRODUCT RECALL: California Consumers warned on Imported Candies Containing Lead

August 27, 2010

Los Angeles – State health officials have cautioned consumers against buying an imported grape candy which was found to contain high lead levels, a statement issued by the agency said.

The Department of Public Health said that Cocon Grape Gummy 100 per cent candy, which was manufactured in Malaysia and distributed by LA-based company, U-Can Food Trading, was found to contain up to 0.19 parts per million of lead.

Health officials said the candy’s lead content is nearly twice the state limit and could pose potential health risks to consumers.

Meanwhile, the candy’s distributor has initiated a voluntary recall of the product as they urge consumers to dispose of the contaminated candies.

Agency officials also advised children and pregnant women who ate the candies to consult doctors to be examined or tested.
