Car Defects Plague Honda and Ford

After getting almost saturated with the news about Toyota’s safety problems, car defect troubles have crossed over to other brands.

Honda Motor Co. has recently expanded its recall of defective air bags to 822,000 vehicles. The recall was made over Honda’s driver's side air bag inflators as they can deploy with too much pressure which may possibly injure or kill the driver.

Recalled Honda cars include certain 2001 and 2002 Accord sedans, some 2002 Acura TL sedans, Odyssey minivans, and CR-V small sport utility vehicles. There have been 11 reported injuries and one death related to Honda’s dangerous air bags.

American car-maker Ford was not spared. The braking system in some of its 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid models is now under scrutiny as some users have reported “a different brake feel”.

While Ford was quick to assure the public that there is no recall and that the different brake feel is due to the hybrid’s unique regenerative brakes switch to conventional hydraulic braking, Ford is set to fix the problem by upgrading the system’s software.

Consumers buy cars not just for the sake of convenience in transportation but also, in the belief that the motor vehicle they buy will be able to serve them well and protect them in case of accident.

But there are some cases, as Toyota’s current dilemma aptly shows, where cars are just as much a danger to the vehicle’s occupants as impaired and distracted drivers on the road. Motor vehicle defects can be fatal even if the driver is skilled or other motorists on the road are careful or the weather is clear.

Under product liability laws, car manufacturers, sellers or car parts providers may be held liable for any injury or damage incurred by the user of their products.

Product liability may be in the form of a “manufacturing defect”, a “dangerous design” or a “marketing defect or failure to warn”.

Pursuing damages against a giant corporation is never easy thus, it would be best to acquire the services of lawyer who may file your product liability claim on your behalf. Likewise, there are some instances, such as the massive Toyota recall, where a class action suit would be a better venue for compensation. Consult with a lawyer to find out your best option in case of injuries incurred from car parts defects.
