Cases of Pedestrian Accident Injuries and Deaths to Children

Pedestrian accident injury is the second leading cause of death among children who are five to 14 years old. Most of these injuries and fatalities are traffic-related, but for ages two and below, they are more likely to sustain injuries from non-traffic-related pedestrian accidents, such as those that occur on sidewalks, in parking lots, and in driveways.

Even though pedestrian injuries are not as common compared to vehicle occupant injuries, most of the injuries suffered by child pedestrians are severe, given their fragile body and vulnerability to injuries. This is aggravated by the fact that guardians or parents overrate the pedestrian skills of their children.

To further understand the dangers of pedestrian accidents to children, here are facts related to pedestrian injuries and fatalities:

  • 669 children who are 14 years old and below died from pedestrian accident injuries in 2001. Out of this number, 521 died in pedestrian accidents involving motor vehicles.

  • Almost 43,300 children who are ages 14 and below were treated in hospital emergency rooms for pedestrian accident injuries in 2002. More or less 73% of these were traffic-related.

  • In 2002, 11 children who are 14 years old and below were killed in pedestrian accidents involving school buses.

Types of Pedestrian Accident Injuries

Pedestrian accidents often result in various injuries, ranging from mild to severe. Usually, when children are involved, such injuries are much more serious.

Some of the different types of pedestrian accident injuries include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Head trauma
  • Brain injury
  • Fractured bones
  • Internal injuries
  • Paralysis
  • Burn injuries

Common Occurrences of Child Pedestrian Injuries and Fatalities

The rate of occurrence of pedestrian accidents for all ages may vary, depending on the location and type of accident. For instance, most pedestrian fatalities that are traffic-related occur in urban areas, while the rate of non-traffic-related pedestrian deaths is twice as high in rural areas compared to urban areas.

In cases of pedestrian accidents involving children, almost 10% occur in driveways wherein victims are walking or playing behind a vehicle in the majority of cases.

Toddlers who are ages one to two sustain the highest number of injuries. Most toddler pedestrian injuries happen when an automobile is backing up.

Most child pedestrian accidents occur in residential neighborhoods and school zones. This may be due to the number of motorists that violate stop signs at intersections. Speeding may also be a factor as studies reveal that two-thirds of motorists exceed the speed limit during the 30-minute period before and after school hours.

Getting Help

Various types of pedestrian accident injuries and fatalities occur due to different factors. Because of this, such cases can be quite complex, as even the severity of injuries can also vary. It is important to get help from an expert lawyer to get the legal assistance that you need.
