Correcting Dog Myths to Avoid Bites

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that most dog bites are inflicted on children; more than 50 percent of bites are on kids between ages five and nine. One of the reasons for dog bites on children is the common misconception on how to treat canines; the wrong practice towards pet dogs can provoke the animal to attack.

Pet owners must understand that dogs don’t speak human language; they base their response on their instincts – from people’s vocalization and body language. Dog trainers explain the common myths and misconceptions in handling pet dogs:

  1. Dogs want hugs

Dogs generally do not want like being restrained, and giving them a hug makes them feel like they are repressed and can cause panic and aggression of the animal

  2. Dogs appreciate when you get in their face
  3. Dogs do not want to be stared in the eye, they read it as an aggressive challenge, and it can cause the animal to respond with an attack

Children usually try to kiss dogs in the face or on the snout which can be dangerous if done to the wrong dog

  4. Dogs want to be pet on their head
  5. Dogs do not trust everyone who touches them, for them, tapping their head can mean aggression and some pet canines might retaliate with a bite

  6. Dogs like it when several people pet them at once
  7. Petting by several people at same time can be overwhelming for a dog, it doesn’t know where the hands are coming from and this makes them scared

  8. A dog with wagging tail is friendly
  9. Wagging of tail can be a sign that a dog is fearful and aggressive

High, erect, fast tail wad indicates aggression, and majority of bite incidents were prior to dog wagging its tail

Learning how to respect the boundaries of the dogs is imperative to avoid any dog bite accidents. Even if your pet dog love the things listed above, other dogs may not tolerate it and may lead to injuries, taking extra caution is still best.

If your child was bitten by a dog because of negligence of another pet owner, you can file for a personal injury claim to get proper compensation for the damages inflicted by the accident.
