SEX DISCRIMINATION: DOL, AstraZeneca Resolves Sex Discrimination Lawsuit through $250,000 Settlement

June 6, 2011

The US Labor Department and AstraZeneca, a prominent pharmaceutical firm, resolved a discrimination lawsuit involving 124 women through a $250,000 settlement.

The lawsuit, which was filed last year, claims that the salary of male employees is, on average,$1,700 higher compared to the amount given to their female counterparts.

In addition,a 2002 inspection of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs revealed that AstraZeneca violated Executive Order 11246 when it failed to make sure that workers will be paid fairly, regardless of their national origin, religion, color, race, and sex.

Under a consent decree of the Department of Administrative Law Judges, the company shall have to submit to a statistical study with regard to the base salary of 415 full-time employees labeled as “specialty care” and “primary care"level III pharmaceutical sales specialists in 14 states including South Carolina, Alabama, and New York.

AstraZeneca also agreed to radically update its affirmative action plan and keep records and documents required by the E.O. 11246 and other federal anti-discrimination laws.

The company will be facing sanctions and contract cancellation with debarment upon non-compliance with the consent decree.
