DRUNK DRIVING: DUI Trial Set in Campus Sends Message to Teens

June 8, 2011

San Clemente — A DUI court set in the gymnasium of San Clemente High School has sent a wake-up message against drunk driving for teens.

According to reports, about 1600 students, all juniors and seniors, gathered inside the gym to witness a DUI trial involving a 33-year-old defendant and another trial involving an 18-year-old defendant. These trials are part of a grant-funded program called Choices and Consequences established by the school.

Both the defendants pleaded guilty to drinking under the influence of alcohol, with the 18-year old also pleading guilty to driving under the influence of marijuana.

The actions of both the defendants did not result in an accident.

Prosecutor Andrew Bugman also presented other DUI cases which led to wrongful deaths and prison sentences.

Meanwhile, defense attorney Andrew Sitzer said his clients received lesser fines, but they will need to participate in an alcohol rehabilitation program. The program is part of the state’s extensive campaign against DUI, with many of the teenagers responding to its message against drunk driving.

Aside from the trial, the program also included various interviews which show the ill-effects of drinking and/or texting while driving.
