BIG RIG ACCIDENT: Distracted Big Rig Driver Crashes into CHP Vehicle

April 18, 2011

Madera County – Authorities believe that the big rig driver’s inattention on the road has caused a crash north of Avenue 12 that sent at least two people, including a CHP officer, to the hospital Monday morning, reports said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the unidentified officer was about to leave a stranded motorist on Highway 99 after one of his family member arrived to help him when the big rig veered off the road and crashed into the stationary CHP vehicle.

The initial impact caused the patrol car to crash into the stranded vehicle which then collided with a third vehicle.

The CHP officer and the stranded motorist were sent to different hospitals to be treated for minor injuries while the family member assisting the motorist did not require medical treatment.

Authorities believe that the big rig driver failed to adjust to the slowing down of traffic caused by the stranded vehicle.

The accident is still under investigation.
