Dozens Hurt in Light Rail Collision

July 18, 2009

San Francisco, California - Dozens of people were hurt after two light rail trains collided Saturday afternoon in West Port Station, according to authorities.

In an interview with reporters, San Francisco Fire Department Deputy Chief Pat Gardner said “this is the worst train collision in recent years”, adding that more than 40 rescuers were called at the scene.

According to reports, 44 people were brought to nearby hospitals, including three victims who were severely injured after a train rear-ended another near a boarding station around 2:30 pm.

Witnesses said they saw westbound Taraval train, which was full of passengers at the time of the accident, hit the K Ingleside train from behind.

Investigators said the Taraval train was smashed while the other train barely sustained damages from the impact.

Meanwhile, San Francisco Municipal Railway Spokesman Judson True said authorities are considering “mechanical and human error” as the cause of the accident.
