CAR ACCIDENT: Driver Dead When Car Crashed into Concrete Wall on Highway 86

April 13, 2011

Thermal – A woman was killed when the car she was driving crashed into a concrete wall along Highway 86S, the Riverside County coroner’s office said.

The 21-year-old Coachella resident was driving her 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse south of the expressway when around 7 pm, it veered to the left and crashed head-on into the pillar that is supporting the Avenue 58 overpass.

The accident resulted in a fire which was put out by Riverside County firefighters. They also pulled the woman out of the car, according to Cal Fire. She was sent to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio but died an hour later after the crash.

Officers are still investigating the cause of the accident, California Highway Patrol Officer Ramon Perez said, as alcohol or drug use does not seem to be a factor. She was driving beyond the 65 mph speed limit, and was wearing a seatbelt.

Her identity is yet to be released as the coroner’s office has not yet notified her family.
