Drowsy Driving Prevention Week

Who knew that there’s like a drowsy driving week but well, apparently, November 2-8, 2009 has been declared by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) as the Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.

According to the NSF, last year, nearly 2 million drivers were involved in car accidents or in near crashes because of drowsy driving. In its 2009 Sleep in America poll, 105 million respondents admitted to drowsy driving at least once last year and 54 million claimed to do so regularly.

Experts say that drowsy driving is almost as dangerous as drunk driving. In fact, sleep expert Raquel Rothe who owns the Sleep EZ Diagnostic Center said that fatigue can impair awareness and slow reaction time, similar to the effects of driving while intoxicated.

Rothe stated that most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep for optimal health and performance. To avoid being a danger on the road to other motorists, pedestrians, passengers and even yourself, here are some of the tips advised by the NSF in order to avoid car crash accidents brought about by driver drowsiness:

  • Do not drink alcohol before driving. Likewise, consult with your doctor regarding the effects of any medication you may be taking as this may cause fatigue.
  • Take a break every two hours especially during long road trips.
  • If driving long distances, a passenger can swap turns with the driver in operating a vehicle.

Feeling sleepy in front of a wheel may seem harmless but fatigued driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving and distracted driving because it’s impaired driving.
