MULTIPLE CAR CRASH: Early Morning Crash at I-880 Kills One, Closes Roads

December 9, 2010

San Leandro – An early morning multiple car crash has left one woman dead and several lanes of Interstate 880 closed for almost two hours, California Highway Patrol said.

The three-car accident happened at around 3 am. A 2010 Subaru driven by Alyssa Collins, 40, was traveling southbound on I-880, north of Washington Avenue.

Reports said that Collins lost control of her car and drifted into the median. It veered further to the right, went across all the lanes, and hit the barrels on the shoulder of the freeway. The car went back into the traffic lanes until it came to rest, vertical to traffic flow.

Another vehicle traveling southbound crashed into the stopped Subaru, causing it to spin until it came to rest in the southbound lanes, facing northbound. However, a third vehicle in the southbound crashed again into it.

Collins was found outside her car and pronounced dead at the scene, according to emergency personnel who responded. The driver of the two other vehicles suffered minor injuries, CHP said.

Three left southbound lanes of I-880 were shut down due to the accident, and were reopened at 5:11 am.
