PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT: Elderly Woman Dies after being Struck by Pickup on Central Avenue

December 19, 2010

Los Angeles – An elderly woman was killed after a pickup truck, and possibly also a bus, struck her Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The accident happened around 5:30 pm in the Green Meadows neighborhood, near the intersection of Central Avenue and East 87th Street. Maria Casteneda Núñez, 66, was crossing the street when the driver of a white pickup traveling south hit her, LA Police Det. Carol Mitchell said.

According to the driver, when he pulled over his truck 25 feet away from the accident and got out of his vehicle, he saw a Metro bus also strike the woman. He went to Southwest Community Police Station to report the accident. He was interviewed by detectives and later released.

Authorities are currently investigating the accident. Metropolitan Transit Authority Spokeswoman Gayle Anderson said that they are cooperating with authorities, even if it is not yet clear whether a bus from their agency was really involved or not.

Metro buses that were probably in the area at the time of the accident were inspected, and camera footage was turned over to police. However, Anderson said that a Metro bus was possibly not a suspected party.
