EMPLOYMENT LAW: Employee who defrauded State Disability Insurance Sentenced

July 7, 2010

Sacramento – A federal court has sentenced an employee of the California Employment Development Department for defrauding the system of nearly $110,000 in fake claims, newspapers reported.

The court sentenced Audrey Renee Bell of Pacoima, who worked in the department’s checking and processing disability claims to five years in prison.

Court records showed that Bell had defrauded the EDD by authorizing fake claims by her friends and took half of the money. The crime occurred between July 2003 and January 2006.

She pleaded guilty in 2009. She was asked to pay $100,000 in restitution.
