PERSONAL INJURY LAW: Expert blames Distracted Driving as Leading Cause of Teenage Death

October 5, 2010

San Diego – A chief trauma specialist has stressed out that distracted driving is one of the leading causes of death among American teens, a news report said.

UC San Diego Health System chief of trauma division Dr Raul Coimbra said that persons under the age of 20 account for the highest number of fatalities in most road accidents. Federal statistics showed that 16 per cent of traffic fatalities are caused by distracted driving.

Coimbra also pointed out that many of these fatalities were not only found to be impaired or over speeding, but were also doing some other things while driving such as talking or texting on a cell phone, eating, fiddling with the radio, watching videos, grooming or chatting with passengers.

The specialist also noted that traffic accidents have killed more American teens that any other type of accidents with the single cause.

As a result, the Trauma Research Education Foundation in cooperation with the Automobile Club of Southern California will hold a Teen Driver Fair at Torres Pines High School on October 16. The event will offer tips on basic car mechanics, safety and tips on choosing the right vehicle.
