Family Files Wrongful Death Claim against City for the Death of Junior Lifeguard

November 19, 2009

Huntington Beach – The family of Alyssa Squirrell, the 11-year-old junior lifeguard who was run over and killed by a boat in a routine exercise, has filed a wrongful death claim against the city and is seeking damages in excess of $10,000.

According to the findings of the three-month investigation conducted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Alyssa was killed after participating in a drill where junior lifeguards jumped off the back of a boat and into the ocean.

She was in the water but was not with her training group when the boat turned around and hit her.

Alyssa sustained deep cuts to her leg and hip after being hit by the boat.

The Squirrell family alleges that Huntington Beach Lifeguard Lt. Greg Crow operated the boat negligently, which led to the accident that caused Alyssa’s injuries and eventual death.

The claim comes after the prosecutors announced last week that no criminal charges will be filed against Crow, who is a decorated Marine Safety officer.

The claim is seeking damages for personal injuries, emotional distress, and damages relating to the death of Alyssa.
