Personal Injury Law: Federal Safety Agency Urges Recall of McDonald’s Drinking Glasses

June 4, 2010

Washington – The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has called on consumers to stop using McDonald’s “Shrek Forever After 3D” drinking glasses after it was found that the paint used on the designs contains cadmium, a toxic element and a known carcinogen, which had been phased out from industrial use some years ago. The collectible glasses were sold at $2 since last month.

As a result, the giant fast food chain voluntarily ordered the recall of more than 12 million glasses from their stores and a refund of the customer’s money.

Reports said CPSP was alerted by the office of Rep. Jackie Speier (Dem-CA), following a tip from a concerned citizen.

Speier said she spoke with the CPSC to conduct tests immediately. The test confirmed their suspicions as cadmium had also been found in glasses in California, Ohio, and Massachusetts.

Speier also urged the government for stronger testing standards to ensure that a product is safe, especially children’s products, before they are sold to consumers.

McDonalds said it plans to post a special page on its website to inform consumers on how to get their full refund.
