Workplace Accident: Four Workers Injured in Refinery Accident in Benicia

Benicia – Emergency personnel from the city of Benicia and Solano County responded to the Valero refinery in Benicia after four workers sustained minor injuries due to a leak of a byproduct in the refining process this morning.

According to a spokeswoman from the refinery, the occupational accident occurred at around 10:10am when a leak was reported in one of the units that creates what is known as “petroleum coke,“ which will be turned to charcoal briquettes.

The four injured workers were treated at the scene but the refinery has yet to find out what caused the accident.

All personnel were accounted for and there were no reports of other injuries.

Workers have been confined in a shelter until the all-clear signal has been made at about 11:45 pm.

The refinery also said that the surrounding community did not suffer any adverse effect from the accident.

As part of the emergency response procedure, the Benicia Fire Department was mobilized and staged at the refinery.
