GM Recalls 1.3 Million Chevrolet and Pontiac for Power Steering Failure

With the whole world watching Toyota’s every move, the news of another massive car recall, this time from General Motors Co. may come as a surprise to many who are anticipating that the company will gain the most from Toyota’s troubles.

Recently, GM has announced the recall of 1.3 million Chevrolet and Pontiac compact cars because of power steering motors that can fail. This recall came about after an investigation of some 1,100 consumer complaints which include 14 reported crashes and 1 injury.

GM Models subject by the recall are the following:

  1. 2005 to 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt
  2. 2007 to 2010 Pontiac G5s
  3. 2005 and 2006 Pontiac Pursuits sold in Canada
  4. 2005 and 2006 Pontiac G4s sold in Mexico

Allegedly, the power steering failure develops over time, specifically in vehicles that have been driven 20,000 to 30,000 miles and is likely to occur in GM cars whose warranties have expired.

Despite the recall, GM however claims that their cars are still safe to drive and that it will only be difficult to steer when traveling under 15 mph. The automaker however, will replace the faulty motors once they get new parts from the supplier, JTEKT Corp.

Should the driver’s power steering assist fails, GM has advised that it will come back after the car is shut off and restarted.

Car parts defects are a problem for every car manufacturer; these are not an exclusive safety concern for Toyota. The recent recall of GM car models is a stark reminder that there is a huge margin for error for many auto makers, very few are spared from the shame and blame of car product liability.

Even Ford, the current US market leader in the industry is no stranger to recall. This is why it is important for the consumers themselves to be conscientious about the cars they buy. Brand names are basically just a name, it is important for would-be car buyers to keep a wary eye out on recalls or reviews on cars.

Personal injuries arising from defective cars/ car parts entitle the victims to recover compensation from car manufacturers, suppliers or dealers. Every consumer deserves quality and safety from their purchases just as all car manufacturers have the duty to provide it.
