CAR ACCIDENT: Google Admits Automated Car Accident But Blames Human Driver

August 5, 2011

Mountain View – Internet giant, Google Inc. has admitted that one of their automated vehicles got involved in an accident but denied that the car was in automated mode, but a human driver was driving it, a statement from the company said.

The company said that under their rules self-driving cars must legally have a human at the wheel to assume control of the vehicle if anything goes wrong. In this case, the car was in manual mode at the time of the accident, the company added.

A Google spokesman said the company’s automated vehicles have traveled more than 160,000 miles autonomously without any incident. The company added that safety is their top priority and that one of the goals is to prevent fender-benders like this accident.

The company has been working on a project using radar, video camera and lasers for cars to navigate roads and stay safe in traffic.

In June, Nevada became the first state to legalize self-driving cars.
