PERSONAL INJURY LAW: Governor Signs Law that Reduces Copper in Brake pads

October 5, 2010

Sacramento – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed SB346, after legislators have approved the law that would require manufacturers to reduce the use of copper in brake pads, a chemical considered to be harmful to salmon and other aquatic life.

The passing of the law was hailed by environmental groups, carmakers, brake manufacturers and government officials, as a possible solution to reduce pollution in San Francisco Bay.

The effort began after scientific studies in 1996 revealed that copper from brake pads was polluting the waters and causing salmons to get confused and make them unable to find spawning grounds.

Scientists believed that copper fall onto the streets every time drivers step on their brakes, which were washed down into the city’s sewer system to the bay.

Brake manufacturers had previously opposed the bill but changed their positions after they came up with a new formula.

Aside from California, Washington has a similar law while New York, Rhode Island and Oregon have introduced similar bills.
