Burbank - Authorities have noted a rise in the number of bicycle accidents in the past two years, as well as the severity of crashes, reports quoting police statistics said.

Police said the number increased as more people were driven by recession to switch to bicycles instead of automobiles and other gas-dependent vehicles.

According to the report, in Burbank alone, more than 32 bike crashes have occurred while there are 27 for all of 2007.

Authorities also noted that many of today’s bicycle riders do not know the rules of the road.
