Holiday Hangovers: Alternative Rides for the Revelers

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), in an effort to promote a safe holiday season is giving the L.A. County residents a special treat this holiday.

Metro will be running round the clock on all of its rail lines -- Metro Red, Purple, Blue, Green and Gold Line trains – on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

There will also be additional train service with greater frequencies on the East Los Angeles to Pasadena for the anticipated participants of 2010 Pasadena Tournament of Roses and Rose Parade.

But aside from providing opportunities for a safer ride home from the parties and festivities, Metro has also sweetened the deal for potential commuters.

All of its bus and rail lines will be free of charge between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Christmas eve as well as New Year’s eve.

Metro’s all-nighter rides and free service is an incentive to everybody to have a safe holiday season.

Drunk driving accidents peak during the holidays. People often become too caught up in the fun of the moment and can have one too many drinks in spite of having to drive themselves home or sometimes, drink even though they’re the designated driver.

In fact, just recently in San Diego, a man was killed in a vehicle collision by a suspected drunk designated driver. The designated driver and his inebriated passenger both came from an office Christmas party.

Parties almost always equal free flowing alcoholic and having a few drinks can significantly impair a person’s driving skills. Impaired driving in turn, is almost always equal to a car or motorcycle accident.

This season, before going to a party, explore your options on how you can get home safely. If it would be impossible for you to avoid alcohol, try to get a designated driver. The designated driver should always be someone who will be sober.

If getting a designated driver is too difficult (after all, everyone wants to have fun), take a car. If you’re in a place where cabs are scarce, get the number of a cab company so you can call them for a pick-up.

But Metro provides a fourth option if you think you can’t resist the temptation to have alcoholic drinks, assign a designated driver, or take a cab home.

Bus and train lines will be open all night – and free to boot. It’s a very special treat.
