How to Miss Memorial Day Mishaps

Not to be a wet blanket but the upcoming weekend celebration has been dubbed “Memorial Day Madness” for a reason.

Aside from remembering the nation’s finest and bravest who’ve lost their lives in service, Memorial Day is also used as a time for picnics, barbeques, family reunions, and sporting events. Add the opening day of Terminator Salvation and Night at the Museum 2 to the list of possible activities, as well as the hundred thousand pools which will be reopened after winter-- let’s just say that mayhem may very well ensue this weekend.

Traffic, droves of people outside, children running around, open pools, abundant food, and yes, free flowing booze. It’s a veritable minefield for possible accidents!

But Memorial Day need not end in a mishap. There are ways to keep yourself and your family safe amidst the rush and revelry of the occasion. Here’s a checklist to remember if you have plans and parties coming up this weekend:

  • The most obvious reminder is, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE. The Department of Transportation has pegged that nearly 13,000 people died because of drunk-driving last 2007. Don’t be a statistic. Remember, all states follow the 0.08 percent alcohol limit. Drivers aged 21 and below will face criminal charges if they are caught with a blood alcohol concentration of .01 or 0.02 percent.

  • KEEP AN EYE ON THE KIDS. For families who’ll be opening their pools, remember to always keep your children supervised at all time. Children will be literally out of their depth when it comes to understanding the dangers of water. Also, don’t let your children wander off even if you’re among family and friends at the park or at the cemetery. Fall accidents can happen at any time and any place.

  • Love to barbeque? Feel like taking your motorcycle out on such a fine day like this? Make sure you PROBE YOUR PRODUCTS. Ensure that every part is working correctly, especially if you’re using high-tech barbeque gadgets to avoid burns. Don’t be a fire hazard when you cook as well. Check your stove for leaking gas. Also, before using your car or your motorcycle, make sure that the parts are working perfectly. Check the brakes, gas line, the lights and those simple steps could prevent a potential injury.

  • And lastly, CLICK IT OR TICKET. Doubtless, you’ll be driving off to many places this weekend but the law will be on alert for possible problems so don’t forget to wear a seat belt or have your family strapped in as well. More than 10,000 police agencies are expected to be involved in this massive seat belt enforcement campaign and police will be on the look-out for CIOT violators day and night and will be out on the streets conducting checkpoints.

Be a hero yourself by following all the laws this Memorial Day and save not just your life but also that of others by following these simple tips. Remember not just the dead but your responsibility to the living.
