ROAD SAFETY: Huntington City Officials to Post DUI Offenders on Facebook

November 18, 2010

Huntington Beach – City officials have found a new, creative way to help deter drunk-driving violations and keep the public informed by posting information on the popular social networking medium, Facebook, reports said.

In a meeting with police officials, City Councilman Devin Dwyer told enforcers that they are willing to post the names of people arrested for drunk driving on the city’s Facebook page.

Dwyer said they turned to Facebook after the local newspaper has stopped publishing the listing. He said he did not think public shaming for DUI offenders as “a bad idea” but considers it as a “tool necessary to bring down the number of drunk drivers”.

The plan is part of the city’s aggressive anti-drunk driving initiative. Aside from the plan, the city also sends letters to bars when a patron is arrested for driving under the influence (DUI).

The city had earlier banned beer bongs and alcoholic games at some establishments.

A July report said the city has ‘a significant DUI problem’, citing about 274 alcohol-related collisions and nearly 1,687 drunk-driving arrests last year.
