BICYCLE ACCIDENT: LA City Council Approves Cyclist Protection Ordinance

July 21, 2011

Los Angeles- The LA City Council has approved a cyclist protection ordinance on Thursday morning.

According to reports, the LA Council has agreed to allow bicyclists to assert civil lawsuit against anyone who assaults them. The riders are entitled to receive a minimum of $1,000 or triple the damages as payment for losses.

The ordinance seeks to provide protection among cyclists against harm, physical assault, or harassment on the road. The LA Council's decision was in response to the series of catastrophic bicycle accidents in the city, including the crash case of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in July 2010.
