BICYCLE SAFETY LAW: LA City Council Okays Bike Master Plan, Including Bike Safety Campaign

March 1, 2011

Los Angeles – The City Council has approved a new bicycle master plan that will pave the way for the building of nearly 1,680 miles of interconnected bikeways and more than 200 miles of new bicycle routes every five years.

Reports said the approved plan would also include a safety campaign that would educate drivers and other motorists on sharing the road with bikers. The plan also aims to reduce the incidents of vehicle collisions involving bicycles and other vehicles at the same time, to help decongest the clogged city streets.

Reports said the budget for the construction of the bike lanes will come from Measure R, which was not started yet because the plan has not been approved. Now that it is approved, the council hopes that the plan would be implemented soon.

The plan was designed by city planners and transportation experts with contributions from bikers.

The bicycle plan was first proposed in 2009 and was revised last year.
