BICYCLE SAFETY: LA City Mayor, Officials Call for New Laws on Bicycle Safety

Los Angeles – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other city officials have expressed support for a state legislation that will provide three-foot passing lane for cyclists and a bicycle helmet law for adults in a bid to make LA streets safer for bicyclists.

Villagoisa made this comment as he discussed new safety ways for bicyclists, together with city officials and bicyclists at the recently-held Bike Summit.

The mayor said that although Los Angeles is the car capital of the US, he would urge to “have some changes” in the law.

Last month, the mayor injured his elbow when got involved in a bike accident with a taxicab.

City officials have also been working on the so-called “Bicycle Plan”, which aims to build more than 1,600 miles of bikeways over the next 30 years and 200 miles in the next five years.

LA Bicycle Advisory Committee chairman Glenn Bailey has also submitted recommendations for improving bicycling in the city. These include road improvement, installation of more bike lanes and more vigorous enforcement of laws, among others.
