CAR ACCIDENT: Los Angeles City and LAPD sued for fatal car accident

May 14, 2010

Los Angeles - Parents of deceased victim Devin Leigh Petelski have filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles City and Los Angeles Police Department on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court/ Santa Monica Division.

Parents Ron Petelski and Shaunnah Godfrey filed negligence complaint against LAPD Officers James Eldridge (driver) and Ramon Vasquez (passenger) for fatally injuring their daughter in a car accident on October 17, 2009.

Devin's BMW was crossing the intersection at Venice Boulevard when it collided with an LAPD vehicle (exceeding the 40 mph speed limit and without the mandatory siren or lights). She suffered fatal injuries and died after two days at UCLA Medical Center.

The family’s attorney asserted that the LAPD officer’s driving behavior was negligent and failed to give signal to other motorists. These acts caused the fatal injuries that led to the victim’s untimely death, the lawyer asserted.

The defendants explained that they were trying to respond to an emergency burglary-in-progress scene.
