WORKPLACE SAFETY: MSHA to Hold Public Hearings on Coal Mine Dust Rule

Arlington, Virginia – At least six (6) public hearings on mine worker’s safety is slated to be held in various places across the country beginning on December 7. The hearings, which will be sponsored by the US Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration, will discuss the proposed rule on “Lowering miner’s Exposure to Respirable Coal Mine Dust, Including Continuous Personal Dust Monitors”.

The announcement was made in a statement released in the agency’s website.

Assistant Secretary of Labor for mine safety and health Joseph Main said the proposed rule would significantly improve health protections for underground and surface coal miners by reducing their occupational exposure to coal mine dust.

The hearing is expected to give mine workers an opportunity to discuss safety issues and problems. The MSHA however they said they welcome post-hearing comments and other information from any interested party, including those who are not presenting oral statements.

The public hearings will begin at 9 am and end at 5 pm. The venues of the hearings include Beaver, West Virginia; Washington, Pennsylvania; Evansville, Indiana; Birmingham, Alabama, among other places.

The series of hearings will begin on December 7 and end on January 27, 2011.
