Man Dies after Plowing through Construction Site

October 7, 2009

El Monte – The driver of a Scion XB died after his vehicle plowed through construction barricades and collided into the back of a water truck on the Westbound 10 Freeway early Wednesday.

The victim, who was identified as 28-year-old Joshua Joseph Ruiz of Alhambra, died in the crash, Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner said. The accident occurred at about 2:30 a.m.

Following the accident, California Highway Patrol Officers responded to the crash and closed all four lanes of the Westbound 10 Freeway at Durfee Avenue.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

According to CHP Sgt. Carl Gafford, "There was a closure with lights, cones and barricades in the HOV lanes. For some unknown reason, he drove through them."

The construction site was located in the carpool lanes.

The freeway lanes have since been re-opened.
