January 21, 2011

Los Angeles - A man died and a woman were injured after a chain hit-and-run crash in Hawthorne on Wednesday.

A minivan driver was heading south of Crenshaw Boulevard when it hit a pedestrian at 9:30 pm. The driver failed to stop and another vehicle ran over the victim. The second driver also neither stopped nor helped the man, according to Los Angeles police reports.

Reports said that a woman who tried to help the victim was hit by a third vehicle heading southbound. The driver stopped to inspect what happened, but several bystanders assaulted him and robbed his cellphone. He drove away, but returned minutes afterwards to report the accident to police officers.

The pedestrian died minutes after arrival in a local hospital, while the woman suffered serious injuries. Los Angeles police officers found the second driver and were arrested for felony hit-and-run charges.

Authorities arrested one of the assailants, Tran Lewis (32) on suspicion of robbery.

Police officers are still investigating the details on the cause of accident.
