Immigration: Management Company Agrees to House 1,300 Immigration Detainees

June 1, 2011

ADELANTO – About 1300 immigration detainees will be housed in a private management company after an agreement was made between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, the city of Adelanto, and the company.

According to ICE, city officials approached the agency with the interest of housing a detention facility and in turn negotiated with Florida-based GEO Group, Inc.

The company purchased the 650-bed facility from Adelanto the previous year for about $28 million and it invested another $22 million for the facility’s renovation, according to the agency’s officials.

The expansion of the facility will be completed in 2012.

GEO is expected to generate $42 million in yearly revenues at 75% occupancy.

ICE officials said the agreement marks an important step in the agency’s long term effort in reforming the immigration detention system.
