PERSONAL INJURY LAW: Metrolink Receives $46 M for Upgrade of Rail Braking System

August 17, 2011

Los Angeles- The Metrolink commuter rail service has received more than $46 million in government funds for the upgrade of the trains’ electronic system which will help track trains and prevent railroad accidents, reports said.

The fund will come from state and federal sources and will be used to pay for the $202-million project to install positive train control, an automated monitoring system on digital technology with advanced radio communications and GPS devices.

Train officials said the new braking system can prevent disasters such as Metrolink’s Chatsworth crash in 2008 which killed 25 persons and injured 135 other people.

The project is expected to complete the system by late 2012 or early 2013. Metrolink serves six Southern California counties.
