MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT: Motorcyclist Dies in Highway 101 Collision after Eluding Arrest

February 11, 2011

Redwood – A chase between a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer and two men in a motorcycle resulted to a collision and the death of a Burlingame man Thursday night, CHP said.

Around 9:30 am, the officer in a patrol car tried to pull over a 1992 Suzuki traveling on the southbound lane of Highway 101, near Ralston Avenue, for a speed violation. However, the riders resisted and took off, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

The motorcyclists exited Highway 101 at Holly Street, and then re-entered at Harbor Boulevard. Another patrol car on the on-ramp to the highway assisted in the pursuit when the motorcycle approached Brittan Avenue. The motorcycle crossed several traffic lanes and swerved into the path of the assisting patrol car.

Both men were taken to Stanford Hospital where Grant Coles, 45, of Burlingame died due to sustained injuries. His companion, 19-year-old Joseph Coles of El Granada, suffered major injuries. The pursuing officer had minor injuries but did not require medical treatment.

The CHP is still investigating who was driving the motorcycle when the accident happened.
