"Operation Dry Water" Campaign to Start On Friday

June 25, 2009

The United States Coast Guard is all set to launch “Operation Dry Water” from the weekend of June 26-28, 2009 in order to curb the incidence of drunken boating.

The two-day operation is a nationwide campaign where Coast Guard officers, sheriff deputies, and harbor patrol officers will patrol the ocean and inland water ways for people who are boating while under the influence.

The Coast Guard reported that alcohol was a significant cause in boating accidents and that it accounted for 21 percent of recreational boating deaths in 2007. Like cars, operating a recreational vessel such as boats with a Blood Alcohol Content of .08% or higher is against the law.

Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Boes said that the Operation Dry Water campaign will complement their daily on the water operations. It is aimed at reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities and to deter alcohol use while on the water.

According to the Coast Guard, anyone found to be boating while under the influence will be taken into custody by the Coast Guard. Offenders will then be turned over to state authorities for prosecution.

Penalties for drunken boating may include fines, jail, impoundment of boats and loss of boating and/or driving privileges. Boats may also be impounded as part of the operation.
