Passion of Christ Actor, Jim Caviezel Injured in Motorcycle Accident

It could have been a lot worse, Washington State Patrol Trooper Rich Magnussen said regarding the motorcycle accident of actor Jim Caviezel.

Caviezel, a 40-year old actor who rose to fame after playing Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s controversial movie, The Passion of Christ was injured when a man threw a bicycle right at him in Washington.

The actor was riding on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle at the time of the incident but was spared from more serious injuries because he was wearing a helmet. He was taken to Cascade medical Center in Leavenworth after incurring cuts and bruises.

Trooper Magnussen reported that the man who hurled a bicycle at Caviezel has mental issues.

While motorcycles can be more fuel-efficient with fewer maintenance hassles than a car (not to mention more cool-looking), it is also a dangerous ride. During crashes, motorcycle riders are more likely to be injured or killed because they lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle.

According to the 2007 Motor Vehicle Crash Data of the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, there were 5,154 motorcyclist fatalities in 2007 and that 103,000 more were injured. The federal government estimates that the number of deaths on motorcycles was about 35 times the number in cars.

The most common cause of death of all motorcyclists is serious head injury. In 2007, 41 percent of fatally injured motorcycle riders and 53 percent of fatally injured passengers were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and about 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries. Thus, helmet use is essential in saving a motorcycle rider’s life.

Fortunately for Caviezel, he obeyed the law and was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Washington is one of the 20 states that enforce mandatory helmet use by all motorcycle riders.

It would have been a tragic and senseless death especially since he just happened to be at the wrong place and at the wrong time when the mentally disturbed man hurled a bike at him.
