BUS ACCIDENT: Pedestrian killed, 19 students injured in LA car-bus crash

October 27, 2010

Los Angeles — A pedestrian was killed and nearly 19 Roosevelt high school students were injured in a car-bus accident in Boyle Heights on Monday at 3:20 p.m.

A teen driver of BMW was heading on the intersection of Boyle Heights when it ran the red light and hit a pedestrian before it finally collided with a school bus, reports said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Some 19 Roosevelt High School students sustained injuries, reports said.

The BMW driver and his two passengers fled the accident scene, but were stopped by a construction worker near the area. The 19 injured students along with the three BMW teenagers sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital, police said.

The bus driver sustained critical injuries and was undergoing medical surgery at a Los Angeles hospital. Paramedics and rescuers pulled the trapped students from the overturned bus; the rest of 25 students were unhurt, reports said.

Police said the school bus was carrying a total of 53 students, who were heading back to Roosevelt High School after an educational trip at East Los Angeles Skills Center. The BMW teen drivers may face felony hit-and-run charges and will be detained at Eastlake Juvenile Hall.

Los Angeles Police officers are still investigating whether drug or alcohol intoxication caused the accident.
